WHITE PAPER

Abstract

Something changed for kids around 2012. Teen depression went up year after year through that decade. By 2021, the CDC found that 42% of high school students felt sad or hopeless most days. These are the first students to grow up with a smartphone as a normal part of being a kid.

Every social-emotional learning program in schools today was written before that change. This paper calls what comes after it Post-2012 SEL.

Control the Moment is built for it. Ten minutes a day, every day, kindergarten through twelfth grade. Every lesson is scripted and taught by the classroom teacher. Every grade runs the same five steps: Regulate, Identify, Understand, Respond, Reflect. The idea behind it is simple. Staying calm under pressure is a skill, and skills need practice every day.
